Body and Pain: Truth and Lies

Pain is often misunderstood. Most of us believe that if we feel pain, something must be wrong. A small ache or discomfort can send us into a spiral—rushing to the doctor, searching symptoms on Google, and imagining the worst possible outcomes. We treat pain as a problem that needs to be fixed immediately, as though it doesn’t have a voice, a message, or wisdom to offer us.

But what if pain isn’t a problem? What if pain is simply information?

We are perceptive beings, and our bodies are profoundly aware of everything around us. Our bodies are constantly communicating with us, picking up signals we might not even be conscious of. Pain is one of the ways your body speaks to you. The next time you feel pain, pause for a moment and ask: Body, what is this? What information is this? Don’t rush for an answer. Stay with the question, and allow your awareness to expand. Let your body show you what’s really going on.

Disconnecting from Our Bodies

In today’s fast-paced world, we often live in a constant state of doing. Meeting deadlines, chasing goals, striving for bigger achievements—this endless hustle leaves us disconnected from our bodies. We treat our bodies as machines that must function no matter what, pushing them beyond their limits and ignoring the subtle signals they give us. When our bodies whisper a message, we don’t listen. And when the whispers go unheard, the body begins to scream—through pain, injuries, or even accidents.

We live in a culture of “doing more” and “having more,” where success is measured by objects and achievements rather than our physical and emotional well-being. This disconnect leaves us unaware of what our body truly desires. Sometimes, your body doesn’t need a complicated solution or a quick fix. It may just want the simplest of things:

  • Soaking in the sun.
  • Taking a peaceful walk in the park.
  • Enjoying your favorite dessert.
  • Playing with your kids or pets.
  • Indulging in a short afternoon nap.
  • Hugging a friend.

Studies show that a warm embrace may contribute to better cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and heart rate, creating a deep sense of relaxation and safety.

When you honor these small desires, you give your body the space to thrive, heal, and experience true ease.

Pain and Suppressed Emotions

We’ve also bought into the idea that life is full of suffering, and the only way to rise above it is through more distractions, more objects, or more drugs. What if suffering is just one perspective? What if there are more joyful, ease-filled ways of being with your body and celebrating life?

Did you know that you sometimes create pain in order to fit in? To feel “normal” because you’ve been taught that struggle and suffering are part of being human.

Chronic pain, for many people, is the result of suppressed emotions. Perhaps you wanted to speak up but couldn’t because the other person wasn’t willing to listen. Or someone hurt you deeply, and their lack of acknowledgment left you carrying unhealed wounds. We often bury these emotions under the weight of busy schedules, drinks, distractions, and endless to-do lists. But brushing your feelings aside doesn’t make them disappear—it only adds to the load your body carries.

Instead of ignoring pain, what if you could stay with it for a moment? Try this: get present with each part of your body. Notice where the pain is and stay with it, without judgment. Ask: Body, what is this? What are you showing me? Your presence alone can begin to dissipate the pain. Just try it.

Befriending Your Body

Hustle culture has normalized pain and suffering. It has normalized pushing your body to achieve more and do more, even when it’s exhausted. What if, instead of rejecting your body, you began listening to it? What if you asked your body what it requires?

When you give your body what it needs—whether it’s a walk in the park, a nap, or a moment of stillness—it can actually help you achieve everything you want, faster and with greater ease. Pain might be a blessing in disguise, inviting you to slow down, pay attention, and receive the wisdom your body is offering.

There are documented cases where people have cured life-threatening conditions like cancer simply by being present with their bodies, listening, and nurturing them. Your body has incredible intelligence. Acknowledge it. Say “hi” to it every morning. Ask: Body, what do you require today? When you choose what feels light and expansive for your body, you become a walking, talking magnet for abundance, joy, and change.
